Shortly after the East Timor riots in 1999, Pastor Paulus visited East Timor and Atambua. When he witnessed an overwhelming number of children scavenging for food from the garbage to survive, he responded to God’s challenge and Mercy Indonesia moved forward from caring for babies to caring for orphans.
After the devastating tsunami on the 26th of December, 2004, Mercy Indonesia, along with many of their partners, responded by establishing three new orphanages. Two which are located in Medan and one is located in Teluk Dalam.
Mercy Indonesia currently has 12 orphanages and 3 children centres throughout Indonesia. There they care for the emotional, physical, educational and spiritual needs of the children.
